Builder Training

Epic has developed specific training programs for Physician and Content Builders. There are different course offerings for prescribers and for clinical content builders, with current descriptions on the Epic User Web (ahs-cis.ca/epicuserweb).

In general, courses are sequential and should be completed in order. Some courses have prerequisites, detailed in course descriptions. Courses may also have project work required for course completion and certification. In most cases, physicians receive documentation needed to validate applications for CME credits from the CFPC or RCPSC.

The on-site experience at Epic's campus in Wisconsin is invaluable. Classes are comprised of clinicians in similar roles at large North American health science centers. Ample opportunity is provided for networking, information sharing and even for collaborating on joint projects.

Physician Builder Courses

Prerequisite

  • CLN101 - EpicCare Physician Overview (2 days on-site): The purpose of this class is to provide an overview of the tools commonly used by Physicians in EpicCare Ambulatory, ASAP ED and EpicCare Inpatient. It provides some context for the use of content and reporting tools. The class shows the tools and workflows that are common to primary care and most specialties, without getting into details of specific specialty needs.
It may be possible to demonstrate CLN101 “equivalency” when clinicians have already had some form of training and/or experience using Epicare ambulatory or inpatient applications.

Required

  • CLN150 - Physician Build – Basic (3 days on-site): this course covers the core tasks that a typical Physician Builder must master. Physicians receive analyst-level build training while gaining awareness of the guardrails placed around activities for each build topic. The class covers a range of topics including SmartTexts, SmartLists, SmartSets, SmartGroups, SmartForms, Preference Lists, SmartLinks, and reporting. The emphasis is on how these tools affect physician productivity.

  • CLN160 - Physician Build – Advanced (2 ½ days on-site): this course covers more advanced topics such as the Workflow Engine, order transmittal, profile structure, and navigator configuration. Physician Builders get additional background information and context to help them contribute to better workflows for themselves and their colleagues. They also learn about strategies for working with the project team on optimization or enhancement projects.

  • CLN160 - Physician Build – Project (2-10 days off-site): builders completing CLN160 must undertake a comprehensive certification project to become certified as Physician Builders. The project can follow a template introduced in the CLN160 classes (least time commitment) or may be of the builder’s own design. The latter still must demonstrate proficiency with specified build tools but may address a problem directly relevant to the builder’s organization. In all cases, participants benefit from Epic analyst consultation and oversight.

Optional

  • CLN160s - Physician Builder Study Hall (1/2 day on-site): this course provides an opportunity to practice skills learned in class, or to work on the CLN160 project, while benefiting from one-on-one support with Epic trainers and analysts.

  • CLN171 – Physician Build – Analytics (3 days on-site): this course builds upon the introduction to Reporting Workbench in the CLN150 course. It explores the design of Reporting Workbench templates, methods for report distribution and how to incorporate data summaries in Radar Dashboards. Builders also learn how to create and maintain patient registries. A project must be completed to attain full Certification for this class.

  • CLN171s – Physician Build – Analytics Study Hall (1/2 day on-site): this course provides an opportunity to practice skills learned in class, or to work on the CLN171 project, while benefiting from one-on-one support with Epic trainers and analysts.

  • CLN172 – Physician Build – Orders (3 days on-site): this course builds on the CLN150 introduction to Order Groups, SmartSets and Order Sets, exploring medication, procedure, procedure category, order composer configuration, frequency, and question records. In addition, participants get an overview of Order Transmittal and Results Routing. A project must be completed to attain full Certification for this class.

  • CLN172s – Physician Build – Orders Study Hall (1/2 day on-site): this course provides an opportunity to practice skills learned in class, or to work on the CLN172 project, while benefiting from one-on-one support with Epic trainers and analysts.

Clinical Content Builder Courses

  • CLN110 – Clinical Content Build – Core (1 ½ days on-site) this course introduces building SmartTools content and configuring reports in Epic.

  • CLN111 – Clinical Content Build – Documentation (2 days on-site) this course is designed for those who support clinicians using more advanced flowsheet documentation such as cascading rows, calculations, scoring systems, and required documentation as well as the Work List.

  • CLN112 – Clinical Content Build – Orders (1 ½ days on-site) this course focuses on the ordering components in the system such as Order Sets, SmartSets, Order Panels, Preference Lists, and Best Practice Criteria.

  • CLN120 – Clinical Content Build – Technical (2 days on-site) this course explores more of the generic architecture behind many tools and workflows such as the Workflow Engine. The Clinical Content Builder courses, once completed, provide eligibility to sit an exam and attain Certification.
